The Upper West Side location of Trader Joe's, frequently cited as the company's busiest store, reopened Saturday after a five-month renovation, only to greet eager shoppers with sparse shelves and long queues.
The store, located on Broadway and 72nd Street, was dubbed "the busiest Trader Joe’s in the world" due to its high-traffic, affluent neighborhood. However, upon reopening, customers found a significantly reduced inventory across both floors of the specialty supermarket.
Shoppers expressed frustration with the lack of basic items. "They don’t even have bags of salt," one customer noted. Others reported missing staples such as couscous, rice, orzo, most varieties of tomato sauce, bacon, and various raw chicken products. The yogurt selection was limited, and many popular frozen items, including Asian specialties, Mexican dishes, frozen pizzas, and mac and cheese, were unavailable.
Employees attributed the shortages to delayed shipments. "There were some delayed shipments, unfortunately," one staff member told customers. "But most of the new stuff is here."
Despite the initial stock issues, employees highlighted the new Chicken Florentine Lasagna as a recommended dish. The store also had a plentiful supply of garlic shrimp chips, a popular item that had previously sold out at other New York City locations.
When asked about when the store would be fully stocked, employees indicated it would likely be later in the week. The store originally opened its doors in 2010.
