Tottenham Hotspur has announced the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes for a reported £85 million, and is on the verge of completing a club-record £100 million deal for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali.

Fernandes' transfer was confirmed on Thursday morning, with the 21-year-old Portuguese international stating that head coach Roberto De Zerbi was a significant factor in his decision to join the London club. "When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way - going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game," Fernandes said. He joins Tottenham from West Ham United, where he made 38 appearances and scored four goals after arriving from Southampton in the summer of 2025.

De Zerbi expressed his admiration for Fernandes, highlighting his combination of technical skill and intensity. "Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level," De Zerbi noted. "Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can progress the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to make things happen in difficult moments."

Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali is en route to London to finalize his move to Tottenham, having declared himself "ready for this new adventure." The Italian international is set to sign a six-year contract, which could see his weekly earnings reach approximately £275,000. Tottenham reportedly agreed to a £92.5 million fee with Newcastle, with add-ons related to Champions League qualification potentially increasing the total to £100 million.

Tonali's transfer would surpass Fernandes' fee, making him Tottenham's record signing. The midfielder joined Newcastle in 2023 from AC Milan for £60 million and made 110 appearances, scoring 10 goals. His time at Newcastle was marked by a 10-month suspension for breaching gambling rules, which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season and the subsequent Euros. He was seen speaking to reporters at Milan Linate Airport as he departed for London.

These signings represent a significant investment for De Zerbi as he aims to rebuild a Tottenham squad that has struggled in recent seasons, finishing 17th in the league for the past two campaigns. The club has also been active in the transfer market, having agreed deals for free agents Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson, and signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million. Tottenham is also reportedly interested in Manchester City's Savinho. The club has, however, accepted a £50 million offer from Brighton for center-back Luka Vuskovic and has yet to receive a bid for midfielder Lucas Bergvall.
