Tory MP Patrick Spencer was acquitted of two counts of sexual assault on July 17, 2026, after a jury deliberated for over seven hours. Spencer, who represents Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, had been accused of touching the breasts of two women on August 12, 2023, at the exclusive Groucho club in London.
During the trial at Southwark Crown Court, Spencer testified that his behavior on the night in question was "wildly misjudged" and "ultimately inappropriate," but he denied intentionally touching either woman sexually. He stated he had been drinking but was "not out of control" when he arrived late at the club after spending the day watching rugby.
His wife, Anna Spencer, a teacher, described him as a "kind," "gentle," and "compassionate" husband and father. She told the jury she had reviewed CCTV footage of the alleged incidents and had never known him to inappropriately touch, look at, or make sexual remarks about any woman in their 20 years of marriage. "He is the most wonderful father, they adore him," she said.
After the verdict, Spencer wept in the dock as Mr. Justice Garnham informed him he was free to go. He then embraced his wife before leaving the courtroom. In a statement delivered outside the court, Spencer said, "Our shared nightmare is now over. I have always maintained my innocence, and today’s not guilty verdict draws a very long and challenging period in my life to a close."
He expressed gratitude to the jury, the court, his legal team, and his family and friends for their unwavering support. He also thanked his constituents for their messages of reassurance. Spencer concluded by stating his intention to return home to his children and resume his work representing his constituents.
