Actor Tim Robbins is urging the Democratic Party to evolve beyond relying on opposition and "get their stuff together," stating that voters need compelling reasons to support the party.

Robbins shared his perspective during a recent appearance on the "SmartLess" podcast, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the current political landscape. "I personally am not a happy guy with either [party]," he said. "I got to say, there got to be better ideas and better, you know, better motivation for people to vote for Democrats. They have to get their stuff together. They really do."

Reflecting on his 1992 satirical film "Bob Roberts," which depicted a conservative politician using media savvy and music to gain public support, Robbins noted the film's themes have gained new relevance. He recalled that during the film's promotion, journalists often asked if it was a commentary on then-President George H.W. Bush. Robbins stated that while Bush was featured in the film, its message also pertained to figures like Al Gore and the broader issue of why systemic change often fails to materialize.

Robbins also critiqued the use of political outrage as a substitute for genuine purpose. He argued that people can mistakenly find validation by waking up and immediately seeking out figures or events to direct their animosity toward. "The idea that you can find your worth and purpose and virtue by hatred is this terrible, terrible idea," Robbins said. He further elaborated that directing hatred towards an abstract concept or idea, rather than an individual, is a less constructive approach.

He suggested this reliance on agitation is not exclusive to one side of the political spectrum. "So, I feel like there’s too many people that wake up agitated about political figures … on either side and it’s not a good way to start your day," Robbins remarked. He offered alternatives like yoga, exercise, or cycling as healthier ways to begin the day rather than "doomscrolling."

These comments follow Robbins' own reflections on grappling with political anger and polarization. In July, he mentioned that an ayahuasca experience helped him release anger stemming from America's increasingly divisive cultural climate. During an appearance on "The Joe Rogan Experience," Robbins explained that his intention entering the ayahuasca ceremony was to cease being consumed by anger over global events. "My intention was to … I was frustrated with feeling anger about what was going on in the world, and I said, ‘I want to release that. I don’t want to be consumed by that anger.’"

Robbins, an Academy Award winner, has had a decades-long career in Hollywood, known for his roles in films such as "Mystic River," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Bull Durham," and "Top Gun."
