Christina Hart, a 29-year-old TikTok influencer from Tennessee, has shared her ordeal with cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness that caused severe gastrointestinal distress and significantly impacted her daily life for nearly a month. Hart, who hosts the TikTok series “The Locally Owned Series,” initially believed her symptoms were indicative of food poisoning or a stomach virus.
After a week of experiencing intense stomach issues, Hart sought medical attention and was diagnosed with cyclosporiasis. She reported being sick for approximately three weeks, with symptoms gradually improving around the three-and-a-half-week mark. The illness caused her to lose 17 pounds, despite a reduced appetite, and resulted in severe bloating.
“That’s really the best word to sum it all up, was miserable,” Hart told USA Today. She described the experience as one where individuals “lose complete control” over bodily functions, making her hesitant to leave her home. “The timestamps in between having to go (to the bathroom) was just a little extreme for me,” she said, adding that fear of public outings stemmed from the unpredictability of the illness. "It’s not a fun experience…you will need to be near a restroom if you have it.”
The CDC has confirmed over 10,000 laboratory-tested cases of cyclosporiasis nationwide, with two deaths reported in Michigan. However, the total number of cases is believed to be higher, as some states employ different testing protocols. Hart’s infection, which she believes may have originated from tainted iceberg lettuce, occurred during a period when the parasite was reportedly prevalent, with one report indicating over 22,000 individuals were sickened nationally.
Hart’s illness required her to pause her social media content creation, which she found disheartening. However, she noted that the experience unexpectedly led to increased engagement from her followers, who inquired about her absence. Despite the discomfort and disruption, Hart expressed gratitude for the unforeseen opportunities that emerged from her challenging experience, stating, “a lot of doors kind of opened unexpectedly through this miserable experience, so I’m grateful for it.
"I hated the whole experience, but now I’m finding the blessing in (it).
