Two sisters and a friend have been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of Caroline Peña, a 32-year-old mother of five, in Del Rio, Texas. The attack occurred in broad daylight at a busy intersection.
Peña was transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center on Thursday afternoon with multiple stab wounds after an assault. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to a medical facility in San Antonio, where she died Thursday evening. Authorities stated she was stabbed twice in the back and once in the stomach.
Del Rio police arrested Kitty Mia Diaz, 21; Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19; and Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, on Thursday. The Del Rio Police Department announced the arrests via a Facebook press release. Diaz and Diaz were taken into custody without incident around 4 p.m. local time, and Faz was arrested shortly thereafter. All three suspects were booked at the Del Rio Police Department before being transferred to the GEO Correctional Facility.
Investigators identified the suspects after reviewing surveillance video, processing evidence, and interviewing witnesses. Police have not publicly released a motive for the attack. The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be filed.
Del Rio is a city of approximately 35,000 residents located in southwest Texas, near the Mexican border. Friends of Peña described her as devoted to her children. She is survived by her five children and a twin sister.
