Michael Thorbjornsen earned his first PGA Tour victory at the Rocket Classic on August 2, 2026, marking the second consecutive week a highly touted American golfer has claimed a win.

Thorbjornsen, 24, navigated a challenging career path to reach this milestone. He endured a back stress fracture in August 2023, which led to him missing the U.S. Amateur and a spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team. Later that year, he underwent ankle surgery while still recovering from his back injury and has withdrawn from multiple PGA Tour events mid-round due to other ailments. Despite these setbacks, since turning professional in June 2024, Thorbjornsen had recorded 40 made cuts and 20 Top 25 finishes in his previous 64 starts before his win.

He began the final round four shots off the lead but carded a bogey-free 63, ultimately securing a two-shot victory. Thorbjornsen's performance included playing alongside major champion Xander Schauffele, who was also in contention on Sunday. While he trails other 24-year-old Tour players like Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia in terms of wins, Thorbjornsen has demonstrated the skills and speed to compete at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay's approach during the final round at the Rocket Classic drew scrutiny. Starting five shots behind the leaders, Cantlay was 2-under through five holes before bogeying the seventh. On the drivable par-4 eighth hole, which played as the easiest on the course, Cantlay opted to hit an iron off the tee, leaving himself approximately 130 yards to the pin. The course was under lift-clean-and-place conditions due to overnight rain, making greens receptive to approach shots.

This strategy contrasted with most of the field, who attempted to drive the green or play closer to it, creating birdie opportunities. Cantlay's approach resulted in him reaching the green 21 feet from the pin, followed by a missed birdie putt and a par. He finished the tournament in a tie for eighth place. Among players finishing tied for eighth or better, only Hideki Matsuyama and Michael Kim also opted to lay up on the eighth hole.

The PGA Tour regular season is concluding with the Wyndham Championship, serving as the final event for players to secure a spot in the Top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings and qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Several prominent golfers, including Keegan Bradley (72), Jason Day (75), Brandt Snedeker (83), Brooks Koepka (86), Tony Finau (89), Lucas Glover (96), and Billy Horschel (107), are on the bubble. These players collectively hold eight major championships and two FedEx Cup titles.

Jackson Koivun, despite a recent win, begins the week at No. 70. Players ranked outside the top 80 will likely need significant performances to advance. Brooks Koepka, who has played the Wyndham Championship sparingly, is among those facing pressure to improve his standing.
