Thomas Tuchel, the current manager of the England football team, has been under intense scrutiny as he guides the squad through the World Cup. While his focus is on securing the nation's first World Cup win in 60 years, resurfaced images from his playing days reveal a strikingly different persona.
Photos from Tuchel's time as a young footballer depict him as a 6ft 2in athlete with model-like features. These images, dating back to when his playing career at German club SSV Ulm was cut short by injury at age 25, have drawn attention to his past. The young Tuchel's striking looks even attracted commercial interest, leading to modeling work for brands like the shaving company Moser and a feature in the German men's magazine ZEITmagazin MANN in 2017. For the magazine shoot, Tuchel traveled to New York, posing in designer clothing on the streets of Brooklyn.
Tuchel reflected on his post-playing career struggles in an interview accompanying the photoshoot, recalling his time working as a barman in Stuttgart. He explained that this period helped him overcome his inhibitions, ultimately leading him back to football.
Born in Krumbach, Germany, Tuchel began his football journey at a young age. He moved to Augsburg's youth academy at 15, later joining Stuttgarter Kickers and then SSV Ulm. His playing career concluded prematurely in 1998 due to a knee injury. He was 25 at the time of his retirement.
Tuchel's coaching career began around 2000 when he was appointed to lead VfB Stuttgart's youth team. He achieved success, leading the U19 Bundesliga side to a title in 2004. After a stint at FC Augsburg, his managerial breakthrough came in 2009 when he took over from Jürgen Klopp at Mainz 05. His five-year tenure there was noted for stabilizing the club and his high-energy, attacking tactical approach.
He further gained recognition at Borussia Dortmund, winning the DfB Pokal trophy in the 2016-17 season. His coaching prowess led him to manage top European clubs, including PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.
Tuchel's personal life has also seen significant changes. In April 2022, while managing Chelsea, he announced his separation from his wife, Sissy, after 12 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in May 2022 at London's High Court. Shortly thereafter, Tuchel was seen with his new partner, Natalie Max.
Reports from 2022 suggested that Tuchel's personal life, including his divorce and new relationship, became a topic of discussion within the Chelsea dressing room. Some sources indicated that this, along with perceived erratic behavior and difficulty with decision-making under pressure, contributed to his dismissal from Chelsea just seven games into the 2022-23 Premier League season. The club reportedly paid him £13 million and his staff an additional £2 million upon his departure.
In October 2024, Tuchel was appointed manager of the England national team on a reported £5 million-a-year contract. He is currently leading England's campaign in the World Cup.
