A third U.S. service member has died in the Middle East due to an Iranian drone attack, the U.S. military announced Sunday, as tensions between Washington and Tehran reach a critical point. The service member was killed in northern Iraq on Saturday during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone.
United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the death, stating that the individual has not been identified out of respect for the family. The announcement follows the deaths of two other U.S. service members and the reported disappearance of another in Jordan on Friday.
In response to the attacks, U.S. forces conducted airstrikes targeting Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites. These strikes, which concluded Saturday evening, aimed to degrade the capabilities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces believed to be responsible for the fatal attack in Jordan.
CENTCOM reported that over 50,000 soldiers are currently deployed across the Middle East, described as being "highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready."
Iranian state media reported that Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, was among the targets of the U.S. strikes. Explosions were also reported in Bandar Abbas and near Sirik. Concurrently, IRGC-affiliated news station Tasnim reported that Iran had struck U.S. assets in Kuwait, including Camp Buehring and Ali Al Salem Air Base, utilizing kamikaze drones in retaliation.
The drone attack on Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Air Base on Friday resulted in the deaths of two service members, with one reported missing in action. Four others were medically evacuated but have since been discharged.
Amidst the escalating conflict, Iranian state media has displayed billboards in Tehran that have drawn attention. One billboard in Valiasr Square featured a message questioning "Who is D nexT one? #lindseygraham," while another in Enghelab Square showed an image of President Trump in a coffin with the words "We will kill Trump" written underneath. These displays follow previous murals targeting the U.S. President and his family.
