The iconic 24-hour American diner is increasingly becoming a rarity, with the number of restaurants offering round-the-clock service nationwide falling 11% between January 2020 and January 2025, according to Yelp data. In cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas, the closures have been particularly pronounced, with 29% and 9% of all-night restaurants ceasing operations, respectively.

However, a handful of establishments are managing to defy this trend. The Red Arrow Diner, with its flagship location in Manchester, New Hampshire, opened in 1922 and has maintained 24/7 service across its four locations in the state. Co-owners Amanda Wihby and George Lawrence emphasize the importance of being available to a diverse clientele during overnight hours, which can include regulars seeking comfort, first responders, third-shift workers, travelers, and those leaving bars.

"It's important for us to be here for them. And now that it's becoming a rare thing to be [open] 24 hours for diners, I feel like it just makes the Red Arrow that [much more] special," Wihby said.

Several factors are contributing to the nationwide decline. Yelp data points to labor shortages and changing consumer behavior, such as younger Americans reducing alcohol consumption, as dampening demand for late-night meals. Additional pressures include the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on sit-down restaurants and the influence of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs on eating habits, according to Food & Wine.

Rising costs also play a significant role. Data from the National Restaurant Association in 2026 indicated that restaurant labor costs are well above historical averages, and surveys show that affordability concerns are leading Americans to cut back on dining out.

Despite these challenges, establishments like the Red Arrow Diner have adapted to remain open. During the pandemic, the diner temporarily closed its third shifts at three of its four locations, a significant shift for a business that had never closed its doors before. It took several years to return all locations to 24/7 operation, but the owners report that all are now prospering.

Wihby attributes the diner's success to its employees and loyal vendors. She highlighted the dedication of staff, with some employees working for the diner for over a decade, and many knowing regular customers by name or their usual order. This personal touch, she believes, is key to customer retention.

The Red Arrow Diner has also served as a notable stop for political figures, including presidential candidates. President Donald Trump visited in 2023, and the diner has a history of hosting politicians, with Wihby noting that "most presidents [have come] in" during election times. The establishment aims to maintain its role as a community hub by serving consistent food at reasonable prices and offering a welcoming environment for a diverse range of patrons.

"There is a seat for everybody at the counter. And what's more American than that? I think that tradition is important, and I think it'll stay alive," Wihby stated.
