Texas A&M head football coach Mike Elko has characterized the ongoing dispute between the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Louisiana State University (LSU) over the eligibility of former NFL players as a form of "parenting." The conference is attempting to establish boundaries regarding the recruitment of athletes who have previously signed NFL contracts.
LSU coach Lane Kiffin had been recruiting former professional players, leading to an immediate pushback from the SEC and the Big Ten conferences, which moved to ban such athletes. This resulted in a series of legal challenges.
A judge initially granted LSU an injunction, allowing two players, Dae’quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, to play. However, the SEC and other conference members signaled their intent to continue opposing LSU's actions.
Sources reported that the SEC's other 15 member schools were expected to vote on LSU's expulsion at a meeting scheduled for September 10. This potential vote followed a comment by Kiffin during a game against Clemson, where he remarked, "Imagine if we had pro players." This statement was included in an amended SEC complaint.
In response to the escalating pressure, LSU reportedly removed former pro-athletes from its final roster and filled the remaining spots with non-professional players just before the SEC took legal action. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry weighed in on the controversy, calling the potential vote to expel LSU "ridiculous" and stating, "Can we just play football?"
Elko likened the situation to a child testing limits until a parent intervenes. "This is a little bit like the son figuring out where the limits are until dad comes home and raises his voice, and then the son goes, ‘I was just kidding, I didn’t mean any of that,’" Elko said. "I think that’s what you’re seeing. LSU will be in the SEC…This is just a little bit of parenting going on right now."
Elko's comments suggest that LSU pushed boundaries and subsequently backed down once the conference administration asserted its authority. The dynamic shifted from LSU's assertive stance on recruiting former pros to a more conciliatory approach once the threat of expulsion became imminent.
LSU and Texas A&M are scheduled to play on September 26 in Baton Rouge. The interactions between coaches Kiffin and Elko following the game are expected to draw significant attention.
