A Tennessee driver, John Alexander Benfield, is accused of failing to brake or take evasive action before colliding with a group of college cyclists, an incident that resulted in the deaths of two students and serious injuries to five others. The crash occurred on August 19 on Highway 19E in Carter County.

According to a newly filed affidavit by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Benfield was driving behind another vehicle when that vehicle changed lanes. Benfield told investigators he did not see the cyclists in the outside lane until the lane change occurred. Investigators reportedly found no physical evidence indicating Benfield attempted to stop or swerve. The two deceased students, identified as Milligan University sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Benfield faces two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of reckless aggravated assault in connection with the incident. The affidavit also noted the odor of marijuana emanating from Benfield's vehicle, though impairment charges were not specified in the warrant. His bond was set at $150,000.

Milligan University released a statement expressing profound shock and sadness over the deaths, asking for prayers for the victims, their families, and the campus community. USA Cycling also issued a statement mourning the loss of Engdahl and Rogers and extending condolences to all affected.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, with findings to be submitted to the district attorney's office upon completion.
