A 19-year-old man is in critical condition after a house fire, suspected to have originated from an exploding e-bike charger, left him with extensive burns. Joey Gregory was staying at a friend's home in Blackpool when the fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. on a Tuesday.
Fire crews responded rapidly, arriving at the scene within four minutes. Gregory was resuscitated before being transported to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was placed in an induced coma. He sustained burns to 47% of his body, primarily on the lower half, and is also experiencing smoke inhalation that has affected his lungs. Doctors have expressed concern about swelling on his brain, which could lead to significant long-term damage, although his cognitive function cannot yet be assessed.
His family has been at his bedside since the incident. His mother, Sally Gregory, described the situation as "devastating" and "unimaginable, unbearable." She stated that doctors have indicated he is not yet out of the woods and will likely require months of recovery.
A family friend, Jane Richardson, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support Gregory and his parents during his hospitalization. The fundraising page notes that the blaze rendered the house uninhabitable. Richardson cautioned that e-bike fires are a significant danger and urged owners to be vigilant, advising against charging devices overnight or unattended.
Gregory's parents have echoed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of heeding safety advice regarding e-bike charging. They are staying near the hospital to remain with their son, who is unaware of the incident as he lost consciousness during the fire. His injuries are severe enough that he is currently being treated to remove dead tissue, with plans for skin grafts once his condition stabilizes. He is expected to require extensive surgery and intensive physical therapy.
Another 13-year-old boy was airlifted from the scene, and three other individuals sustained minor injuries. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing, with authorities and fire service personnel remaining at the property.
