A 15-year-old boater was rescued after an 18-foot fishing vessel capsized off the coast of Alaska, resulting in the deaths of two other individuals, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The teenager was found clinging to the capsized skiff on Monday and exhibiting symptoms of hypothermia.
Rescue crews initiated a search mission early Monday after being alerted by Alaska State Troopers that the vessel was overdue. The boat had been expected to return Sunday morning.
Due to adverse weather conditions and poor visibility, rescue operations could not commence until Monday morning. A Coast Guard aircrew eventually spotted the survivor and deployed a raft. A nearby good Samaritan vessel assisted in rescuing the teenager and recovering the bodies of the two deceased mariners from the water. The survivor and the deceased were then transported to Nome, Alaska. The incident occurred approximately 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island.
