A 19-year-old driver, Mohammed Halani, has received a suspended sentence for a high-speed police chase that ended with his car crashing into a chicken shop in Peterborough. The incident, which occurred on May 24, saw Halani narrowly miss pedestrians as he mounted the pavement and collided with the building.

According to reports, the chase began when Halani failed to stop for officers on Lincoln Road. He was captured on video driving erratically, speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, and disregarding traffic signs and bollards. The pursuit continued into the city centre, where Halani eventually crashed into the shop on Westgate. Rubble from the impact fell onto his vehicle.

Following the crash, Halani fled the scene on foot through Queensgate shopping centre, attempting to hide in a restaurant. He was apprehended by officers and subsequently arrested for dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Cambridgeshire Police stated that no one was injured during the collision, attributing this to the quick reactions of pedestrians and officers reducing their speed due to the presence of people. PC Martyn Chapman described the incident as "shocking" and noted that only "milliseconds" separated pedestrians from serious injury or worse.

Halani, of Audley Gate, Netherton, admitted to charges of failing to stop, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance. At Peterborough Magistrates' Court, he was sentenced to a year in prison, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, 15 days of rehabilitation activity, and received a two-year driving disqualification.
