An 18-year-old driver, Sonny Horsfall, has been sentenced to three years in prison and banned from driving for four years for mowing down an 84-year-old pensioner. The incident occurred on April 22, when Horsfall lost control of his newly acquired Audi A4, mounted the pavement, and struck the victim, identified only as Eddie, who was walking home.
Before the collision, Horsfall had been recorded on video boasting about his new vehicle, referring to it as a "beast," and bragging about running red lights. He was driving without insurance and was already disqualified from driving.
Following the impact, which was captured on CCTV, Horsfall did not stop to assist the injured pensioner. Instead, he fled the scene and ordered a takeaway pizza. He later sent voice messages to a friend stating, "Bro, the man got smashed. Like bro, I think I have killed him, me bro, wow." He also admitted to "ripping the f****** key out in panic" and running to a nearby location.
Eddie suffered severe injuries, including multiple pelvic fractures and fractures to his back and right foot. He was hospitalized and spent nearly a week in intensive care. In a victim impact statement, he described the profound loss of his independence, confidence, and sense of safety, noting that he continues to experience leg pain and relies on a walking frame.
Horsfall pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after a road traffic accident. He was sentenced at Durham Crown Court on Wednesday.
Detective Constable Rachael Johnson of Cleveland Police described the collision as "shocking and wholly avoidable," emphasizing Horsfall's "complete disregard for the safety of others." Johnson added that driving is a privilege and a responsibility, and those who drive without a license, insurance, or recklessly put innocent members of the public at risk. The police thanked the public for their assistance and offered their thoughts to Eddie and his family during his recovery.
