Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, recently drew criticism when his remarks targeting communists were seen by some as inadvertently reflecting on President Donald Trump.
During a Fox News appearance, Cruz referred to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as “comrade Mamdani,” criticizing him for owning property in Mamdani's birth country of Uganda. Cruz stated that the leaders of communist regimes are consistently wealthy, alleging they "steal and rob from those they govern."
Mamdani identifies as a democratic socialist, not a communist. However, the senator's comments align with a recent trend among Republican figures, including Trump, to frequently use the term "communist" to describe political opponents.
Critics pointed out the perceived parallels between Cruz's statements and Trump's own financial standing and business dealings. Trump's wealth has reportedly increased significantly since his return to the White House, with a substantial portion derived from cryptocurrency ventures. The New York Times reported that some 764,000 cryptocurrency wallets experienced substantial losses in $TRUMP while Trump's businesses saw gains.
The Wall Street Journal editorial board previously commented on Trump's use of the presidency for personal financial benefit, suggesting it demeaned the office. Given this context, Cruz's characterization of leaders who are "always rich" and "steal and rob from those they govern" was interpreted by some as applicable to Trump himself.
