A dramatic pursuit through Los Angeles involving suspected car thieves ended in a crash and multiple arrests after the suspects attempted to evade California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers. The incident began around 2 a.m. on October 21 when CHP South Los Angeles officers attempted to stop a white Lexus with an improper license plate.
The driver of the Lexus refused to pull over, initiating a pursuit that reached speeds over 80 mph. Officers deployed a spike strip, disabling the vehicle's front left tire, but the driver continued toward downtown Los Angeles, with a law enforcement helicopter tracking the damaged car.
Near the intersection of 3rd Street and Lower Grand Avenue, the occupants of the damaged white Lexus abandoned the vehicle and transferred to a second, gray Lexus. This maneuver triggered a second pursuit, during which the new driver also reached speeds nearing 80 mph before crashing near Broadway and College Street.
Multiple suspects fled the wreckage on foot, leading to foot pursuits as CHP officers and additional units converged on the scene. Two suspects were apprehended by CHP South Los Angeles officers, and several others were detained by additional CHP personnel.
Investigators determined that both Lexus vehicles had been reported stolen and displayed license plates that did not match their vehicle identification numbers. The suspects face charges including felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of stolen vehicles, conspiracy, and resisting arrest.
