Susanna Reid, host of Good Morning Britain, has questioned Kerry Katona about allowing her daughter, Dylan-Jorge (DJ), to use social media at the age of eight. The discussion arose when Katona appeared on the show with her 19-year-old daughter Heidi to discuss DJ's developing interest in adult skincare products, fueled by online content.
Heidi, who is an influencer, expressed concern over her younger sister's fixation on social media trends like "Get Ready With Me" clips and achieving "glass skin." She noted that DJ, now 12, began wanting to purchase adult skincare after observing these videos and wanting to emulate her peers.
Reid directly asked Katona why an eight-year-old was permitted on social media. Katona defended her decision by stating that many other children of DJ's age were also using the platforms. She acknowledged that while she tried to limit her daughter's access, it was difficult because "everybody else is doing it."
Katona recalled an incident at a Boots store where she observed numerous young children, some as young as eight, purchasing a variety of skincare items. Her daughter Heidi then pointed out that the situation had become "out of hand."
This exchange occurred in the context of the UK government's recent announcement of plans to ban social media for individuals under 16. Under the proposed regulations, 16 and 17-year-olds would also face overnight curfews starting in Spring 2027. Heidi supported calls for a ban on social media for those under 16 and for age warnings on skincare products, highlighting concerns that "adult beauty standards are being force-fed down kids' throats through social media."
Katona, a mother of five, also shared that DJ recently transitioned to a state school after her private school closed. The primary concern for DJ was the shorter summer holidays at the state school compared to the extended breaks offered by her former private institution. Katona also voiced her disapproval of the amount of homework assigned to children during holidays.
Katona has previously spoken about her struggles with chronic pain, including ulcerative colitis and arthritis in her shoulders and back. She is currently awaiting the results of a health MOT to identify the root cause of her ongoing pain and has expressed concern about her body's fragility.
