Luigi Mangione, who faces federal charges related to stalking resulting in death and state charges for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is scheduled for an unexpected hearing Friday morning in Manhattan federal court. The joint request for the hearing by prosecutors and Mangione's defense attorneys has fueled speculation that a plea deal may be forthcoming.

Mangione is charged with two counts of stalking resulting in death in the federal case. Two other federal charges, including murder through the use of a firearm, were previously dismissed. He is simultaneously facing state court charges in Manhattan for the alleged murder of Brian Thompson, 50, who was shot and killed in December 2024.

This sudden court appearance follows months of stalled negotiations between Mangione's legal team and federal prosecutors regarding a potential plea agreement, according to NBC News, citing anonymous law enforcement sources. Earlier, Mangione's lead attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, criticized the government's alleged attempts to prejudice the public against her client. She stated that such actions, often attributed to anonymous sources, represent a "troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury."

Friedman Agnifilo emphasized that every defendant is presumed innocent and that Mangione faces the unique challenge of fighting similar charges in two separate court systems. Representatives for Mangione and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
