Suri Cruise, the 20-year-old daughter of actresses Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, has legally changed her surname to Noelle and is pursuing an acting career. She is set to perform in a student production of "Midsummer!" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Cruise is reported to have not seen his daughter since she was six years old. While Holmes is expected to attend her daughter's performances, Cruise's attendance is not anticipated, with sources citing his involvement in the Church of Scientology, a faith considered homophobic, as a potential conflict with the play's themes. More significantly, a profound estrangement is reported to exist between Cruise and his daughter.

It was revealed this week that Suri has legally changed her name to Suri Noelle, adopting her mother's middle name as her new surname. This change is believed to have occurred after her 18th birthday in New York, where such name changes can be filed privately. A source close to Holmes indicated that she fully supported her daughter's decision, viewing it as a natural evolution and a step towards establishing her own identity.

Evidence of the name change surfaced when Suri used "Suri Noelle" on electoral records during her freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is studying musical theatre. This followed her graduation from LaGuardia High School, where she was already using the name Suri Noelle. In 2023, she played the lead role of Morticia in her high school's production of "The Addams Family: A New Musical."

A source described Suri as a talented and dedicated student actor, determined to establish herself through hard work rather than familial connections. "She is a nice girl and goes by a different name to protect her privacy," the source stated. "The thing is that she is studying her ass off and actually putting in the work to be a trained actor, not just a nepo baby."

Cruise and Holmes, who were married from 2006 to 2012, initially presented an idyllic family image. Suri was frequently photographed with her father in her early years. However, following their 2012 divorce, where Holmes gained custody, Suri largely disappeared from public view with her father. Reports at the time indicated that Cruise would pay $400,000 annually for Suri's living expenses until her 18th birthday.

In 2012, Cruise sued two celebrity magazines for reporting he had "abandoned" his daughter, a case settled out of court. During a deposition, Cruise admitted to seeing Suri for only a limited number of days in the months following the divorce, attributing the distance to his demanding filming schedule and emphasizing his continued love and responsibility towards her.

Sources close to Cruise have denied any estrangement, but others point to Scientology as the reason. Holmes, who returned to her Catholic faith after the divorce, reportedly sought to distance Suri from Scientology. Experts familiar with the religion suggest that its doctrine can discourage relationships with individuals outside the faith, potentially explaining Cruise's apparent distance from his daughter if she remains aligned with her mother.

Brendan Tighe, a former Scientologist who worked in Cruise's security detail, and Mike Rinder, a former Scientology official, have both suggested that Cruise's contact with Suri is contingent on her relationship with Holmes and that Scientology tenets may prioritize the religion over personal family ties. Suri Noelle, however, appears focused on forging her own path in the performing arts.
