Daniel Leonard, the 25-year-old son of boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, was arrested in July on multiple misdemeanor charges, including possession of methamphetamine, alprazolam, and dextroamphetamine, along with nitrous oxide with intent to inhale. The Santa Monica Police Department apprehended Leonard and another individual on July 7 after observing them with a nitrous oxide tank and a balloon.
According to a police spokesperson, officers approached the pair after seeing them at 1:17 a.m. One individual attempted to hide the balloon while the other concealed the tank. Both were detained, and officers confirmed the tank was nitrous oxide. Leonard was subsequently arrested for possessing nitrous oxide with intent to inhale and faced additional charges for the other substances found on his person during the arrest.
Prosecutors have charged Daniel Leonard with four counts: unlawfully possessing nitrous oxide and a substance containing nitrous oxide, possessing MDMA, possessing alprazolam, and possessing dextroamphetamine. He is scheduled for a court hearing on October 12.
This incident follows a prior arrest on May 20 in Los Angeles for allegedly violating a protective order. The order was reportedly issued after an alleged violent incident involving his father. Sugar Ray Leonard had stated in a court filing for a restraining order that his son's behavior had recently deteriorated, describing him as a danger to himself and his family and noting his addiction struggles. The temporary restraining order was dissolved on June 15 when neither party appeared for a crucial court hearing.
Daniel Leonard is Sugar Ray Leonard's youngest son. Representatives for Daniel Leonard did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
