Strategic Minerals is undertaking the largest diamond drilling program in Britain this century at its Redmoor Project in Cornwall, aiming to define a globally significant tungsten deposit. The project, developed through its subsidiary Cornwall Resources, is situated in an area with a rich mining heritage and is strategically positioned to capitalize on a rapidly growing demand for tungsten.

Redmoor Project Focus

The Redmoor Project's license area covers 23.68 square kilometers in the Tamar Valley. While Strategic Minerals also holds assets in Australia and New Mexico that generate revenue from magnetite stockpiles, the primary value and future potential are concentrated in the Redmoor deposit, which also contains tin, copper, and silver mineralization.

The company has raised £8.7 million to conduct infill drilling. This process involves tightening the geological grid and filling gaps between previous boreholes to increase confidence in the size and grade of the ore body. The current drilling program aims to complete 22,500 meters, with a target completion date in the second quarter of 2027. Seven pad locations are planned, from which at least 44 resource infill drillholes and nine metallurgical testing boreholes will be completed.

Favorable Geology and Economics

Geological studies indicate that Redmoor is located in the Cornubian province, where mineral-rich fluids from cooling granite have concentrated wolframite, cassiterite, and copper sulfides into a rich, compact vein system. The deposit is estimated at 17.4 million tons, with grades around 0.5 percent tungsten trioxide, which is considerably higher than the industry norm of 0.15 to 0.25 percent.

Initial economic assessments point to a potential after-tax net present value of $1.54 billion and an internal rate of return of 40 percent, based on a pre-production spend of $109.7 million. An upside case, assuming higher tungsten prices, projects a value of $2.71 billion. These figures are based on a tungsten price below current market benchmarks, even for the optimistic scenario.

The comprehensive data from the current drilling campaign is expected by the first quarter of next year and will form the basis for feasibility studies required for underground mining. The company's aspirational timeline targets a production operation within three years, which could create hundreds of jobs and stimulate significant local investment.

Market Dynamics and Strategic Importance

Global demand for tungsten is surging, exacerbated by China's dominance in supply, which accounts for approximately 85 percent of the world's tungsten. Recent export curbs by China and its absorption of global scrap have further tightened the market. The United States has already banned Chinese-sourced tungsten from military end-uses and their manufacturing, highlighting the metal's strategic importance.

Tungsten is crucial for advanced manufacturing, including carbide tips for cutting tools, heat dissipation layers in semiconductors, and stabilizers in electric vehicle batteries. Its application in nuclear fusion reactors is also significant, with each reactor potentially requiring around 3,000 tons of the metal. Britain's ambition to lead in fusion research is contingent on a domestic supply of tungsten for building such reactors.

Development and Challenges

Strategic Minerals' managing director, Dennis Rowland, noted that the timeline to production is aspirational and depends on various factors, including external funding and the UK's planning process. Recent critical minerals reforms in the UK aim to create a presumption in favor of qualifying mineral projects in the planning system.

While government funding for mining projects is available, it is limited. Strategic Minerals anticipates that the bulk of the development costs will be privately financed, with potential for additional government grants.

Despite the promising outlook, the project faces the inherent challenges of small-cap mining, including reliance on market conditions for ongoing funding and the complexities of the planning and permitting process. However, with supportive local communities and the company's awareness of potential hurdles, Redmoor has the potential to re-establish Cornwall on the international mining map.
