San Francisco 49ers legend Steve Young has expressed concern regarding the conduct of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, stating that the situation appears to be "beyond football." Young made these remarks at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, indicating a personal worry for the player.
Aiyuk, 28, has been notably absent from team activities, a situation described by head coach Kyle Shanahan as not seeing the player "in forever." The receiver was placed on the reserve list with a "left squad" designation. His recent actions have included social media outbursts and an arrest warrant in California for a December incident involving alleged speeding. Aiyuk has also publicly stated his intention to not return to the 49ers, writing on Instagram, "I will not be reinstating with them or ever doing any kind of business with them."
Young, a former Super Bowl MVP, indicated a desire to offer support, stating, "I feel like I want to reach out and help." He suggested that the current focus should not solely be on football, emphasizing the need to address the broader issues affecting Aiyuk.
Aiyuk's career with the 49ers began in 2020 as a third-round pick. He signed a four-year, $120 million extension in 2024 but subsequently missed the entire 2025 season due to ACL and MCL tears. Despite his contract, Aiyuk has reportedly demanded a trade. His online presence has also drawn attention, including a recent rant where he challenged his agent and criticized Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.
As Niners training camp is set to begin on Sunday, July 26, Aiyuk's status with the team remains uncertain, with his public statements indicating a definitive separation. He has also used the hashtag "#RAISEHAIL," often associated with the Commanders.
