Steve Smith, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver and NFL Network analyst, is reportedly set to take on a significant role at ESPN, appearing on the network's studio shows. This development follows recent layoffs at ESPN that included analyst Ryan Clark.
Clark, who was a regular on programs such as "NFL Live," "Get Up," and "First Take," as well as part of the "Monday Night Football" coverage, was informed of his termination during a commercial break on "NFL Live." He was among several personalities let go as part of broader changes at the network.
Smith, 47, joined NFL Network in 2017 after concluding a 16-year NFL career. During his playing days, he accumulated 1,031 receptions, 14,731 receiving yards, and 81 touchdowns, earning five Pro Bowl selections. He played 13 seasons with the Carolina Panthers and three with the Baltimore Ravens.
The integration of the NFL Network into ESPN, a move reportedly influenced by ESPN's $3 billion acquisition, has been cited as a factor in the recent personnel changes. Smith is known for his candid and opinionated commentary, a style that aligns with ESPN's current on-air approach.
Other notable departures from ESPN as part of these layoffs include former NFL MVP Cam Newton, who was a regular on "First Take," and longtime NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Ex-Jet Bart Scott also was let go. Despite these changes, Stephen A. Smith, a prominent figure at ESPN, has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the network's decision to part ways with Clark.
