Former UK political aide Steve Hilton has conceded defeat in his bid for California governor, losing to Democratic challenger Xavier Becerra. Both candidates focused their campaigns on issues such as the state's high cost of living, housing affordability, energy policy, and relations with the federal government.
Becerra declared victory in Sacramento, stating, "We fought and we won." He acknowledged the challenges the state has faced but expressed optimism for the future, declaring the beginning of the "Becerra era."
Hilton acknowledged his loss, citing the national political climate that favored Democrats, leading to full control of the US Congress by the party. Despite the setback, Hilton expressed his belief that California remains the "greatest place in the greatest nation on earth" and that the desired change for the state is "delayed but coming."
The gubernatorial race saw an initial field of contenders, but the contest focused on Becerra and Hilton after congressman Eric Swalwell withdrew amid sexual assault allegations, which he has denied. Becerra and Hilton emerged as the frontrunners after the primary, ahead of progressive billionaire Tom Steyer.
Hilton, who received an endorsement from President Trump, faced a challenging campaign as a Republican in a predominantly liberal state.
