Stephen A. Smith, a prominent personality on ESPN, has issued a strong criticism of Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve for wearing a "Trans Kids Belong" t-shirt during a recent WNBA game. Smith argued on his YouTube show that Reeve's action was irresponsible and put her personal stance above the interests of the league.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when Reeve appeared on the sidelines during her team's game against Sophie Cunningham's Indiana Fever, sporting the pro-trans message. This occurred in the wake of comments made by Cunningham, who had stated that young girls should not have to compete against biological males in sports.

In a lengthy monologue, Smith questioned Reeve's decision, stating, "You are a coach for a female basketball team. Do you not think that the females are being screwed over if they have to compete against an individual born as a male?"

Smith characterized Reeve's choice as "selfishness" and "putting yourself before the betterment of the whole [league]." He emphasized that the issue was not about transphobia but about fairness in women's sports and the potential impact on WNBA sponsors.

Reeve and Cunningham were observed having a conversation before the game. Post-game, Reeve commented on the discussion, saying she believed it was productive and that both she and Cunningham understood they had platforms and aimed to educate. "I come from a space of inclusion," Reeve stated, adding that she found the narrative suggesting transgender athletes are the primary problem in women's sports to be problematic.

The controversy also extended beyond the court, with demonstrations reported outside the Target Center in Minneapolis. Cunningham herself faced boos during the game.
