A 19-year-old star baseball player with a promising future died after falling from the 27th floor of Los Angeles City Hall on Wednesday, authorities confirmed.
Avery Truesdale, of Arcadia, was identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office as the individual who jumped from the building's observation deck, landing on the front steps. Truesdale was not an employee of the City of Los Angeles and was reportedly wearing a visitor badge at the time of the incident.
Visitors to Los Angeles City Hall are required to undergo security screening, obtain a visitor badge, and state their destination within the building. The LAPD is investigating the death. Parts of City Hall remained cordoned off with yellow crime-scene tape on Thursday as the investigation continued, with steel security doors blocking public access to some areas, though the observation deck remained open.
Truesdale was a standout outfielder for the Arcadia Apaches, a graduating senior from Arcadia High School's class of 2025. During his three-year varsity career, he maintained a .310 batting average and wore jersey number 13. He also played with the San Gabriel Valley Arsenal Baseball travel team, recognized as a top college development program in the state.
His sudden death has left his family, teammates, and those who knew him searching for answers.
"The light he brought into every room touched everyone who knew him," read an online fundraiser established to assist Truesdale's family with funeral expenses. "His loss is being felt deeply by teammates, coaches, classmates, teachers, friends, and all who knew him," the Apaches said in a statement.
Stacy Hoherd-Harris, a former elementary school teacher, remembered Truesdale as an exceptional student in her physical education classes, noting his "kindness, enthusiasm, passion, encouragement, and positivity."
