South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to serve as interim senator for the remainder of his term. Graham, a Republican representing South Carolina, died unexpectedly on Saturday evening after suffering a tear in his aorta. He was 71.
McMaster announced his decision at a press conference, stating, "Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now." Nordone is expected to serve until January 2027.
South Carolina is scheduled to hold a special primary election on August 11 to select a Republican candidate to succeed Graham for the next full term. President Trump had publicly urged McMaster to appoint Nordone as her brother's interim successor, calling it a "fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly." Trump shared this sentiment on Truth Social.
The late senator had a close relationship with his sister, having become her legal guardian in his early twenties after their parents died. He supported her through her education. Graham had previously suggested that Nordone would serve as first lady if he had won the presidency in 2016.
Senator Graham was actively involved in several key foreign policy initiatives before his death, including efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, increase pressure on Iran, and implement sanctions against Russia. According to Axios, Graham had remarked hours before his passing about needing to complete these foreign policy tasks. He had reportedly acknowledged not feeling well and had been advised to seek medical attention but intended to do so after a scheduled television appearance.
Graham was a prominent figure in the Senate, participating in significant bipartisan legislation. He was also recognized for his influence on the global stage, engaging with world leaders and advocating for a strong stance against America's adversaries.
