A man believed to be Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, called police two days before his mother was shot, reportedly stating that his parents were withholding his weapons. The man told officers that his parents had told him he must surrender his firearms if he wanted to continue living in their Ashburn, Virginia, home.
According to an incident report cited by The Athletic, the caller also stated he was a certified UFC fighter and felt he could not defend himself without access to his weapons. He also mentioned his CPR license and expressed concern about not being able to help others. The report indicated that the caller said his parents refused to give him his firearms back even when he wanted to go to a shooting range.
On July 26, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a home on Northpark Drive in Ashburn. They arrested Elijah Zion Bieniemy on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. His mother, Mia Bieniemy, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was initially in stable condition, later transferred out of intensive care.
Court records indicate that Elijah Bieniemy appears to suffer from significant mental health issues and may not be able to assist in his own defense. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond. His court appearance is pending a mental health competency evaluation.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, served as the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022, during which time the team won two Super Bowls. He later joined the Washington Commanders and then returned to the Chiefs this year in his former role.
