The son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudon County Sheriff's Office.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was taken into custody Sunday evening at a home on Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia. Police responded to the residence and found an adult female, identified as Mia Bieniemy, 57, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was hospitalized overnight with serious injuries.
Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs in Missouri at the time of the incident, as the team's coaches, rookies, and quarterbacks had reported to training camp. Veteran players were scheduled to report later in the week.
The Kansas City Chiefs organization has acknowledged the incident. "The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family," a team statement read. "Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
An NFL source indicated that Eric Bieniemy is expected to request a temporary leave from the team to be with his wife and family. Bieniemy, 56, returned to the Chiefs this year as offensive coordinator after previous coaching stints with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA's football program. From 2018 to 2022, he oversaw an offense that saw Patrick Mahomes win two MVP awards and the Chiefs win two Super Bowls.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy is being held without bond at the Loudon County Adult Detention Center. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office confirmed the investigation is ongoing. The press release detailed that police arrived at the scene Sunday evening to find the adult female with multiple gunshot wounds.
