A 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his retired corrections officer mother to death inside their home in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Tuesday. The NYPD identified the suspect as Armel Crawford and the victim as Joanne Crawford, 61.
Authorities discovered Joanne Crawford with multiple stab wounds inside the residence on Nameoke Avenue around 10:40 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Armel Crawford was apprehended hours later and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to a family member, Armel Crawford reportedly had a contentious relationship with his mother stemming from her career as a corrections officer. The victim's first cousin, Barry Crawford, told reporters that Armel believed his mother's job, which kept her away from home, prevented him from receiving the "quality time" he desired while growing up.
Barry Crawford also suggested that a recent disagreement may have contributed to the fatal incident. He stated that Armel was allegedly upset because he was no longer permitted to care for his grandmother, with the reason cited being a perceived lack of respect. Police have not officially confirmed the details of any disputes between the mother and son.
Joanne Crawford was remembered by her cousin as a dedicated and giving member of the community who was always supportive of her loved ones. Barry Crawford described her as a "loving person" who was deeply involved in the lives of those she encountered, expressing bewilderment and grief over the tragedy.
