A 31-year-old man has appeared in court charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of his father, who was shot dead on their family farm. Adam Olverson appeared at Preston Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, facing charges including manslaughter, possession of a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without a license.

Thomas Olverson, 75, was found dead from gunshot injuries on July 25, 2024, at Marsh Hey Farm in Scarisbrick, Lancashire. Neighbors reported believing he was shot while sitting on a vintage tractor in one of the farm's fields. The discovery sent shockwaves through the rural community.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 4:55 p.m. following reports of a firearm being discharged. Emergency services attended but pronounced Thomas Olverson dead at the scene. A shotgun was recovered from the location, and a murder inquiry was launched.

Adam Olverson was initially arrested on suspicion of murder. Following an investigation and subsequent bail, he was charged earlier this week. During his court appearance, the defendant, who is on bail, did not enter pleas to any of the charges. He confirmed his name, address, and date of birth. The defense indicated that no pleas would be entered at this time, with the case having been ongoing for approximately two years.

Prosecutors stated they would not oppose the continuation of unconditional bail. The case has been adjourned to July 29 for a plea and preparation hearing. Thomas Olverson was described by neighbors as an 'old-fashioned farmer' who kept to himself. He had lived on the farm for much of his life with his wife and son.
