A Pennsylvania State Police helicopter collided in midair with a small plane near Carlisle Airport on Wednesday evening, officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the collision occurred just before 8 p.m. as the helicopter was approaching the airport. The aircraft involved were a Cessna 150 and a Bell 407 state police chopper carrying two passengers.

Governor Josh Shapiro stated on social media that he had been briefed on the incident and was en route to the scene. "Lori and I are praying hard and we ask all of our fellow Pennsylvanians to join us," he wrote.

Details regarding the number of occupants in the small plane remain unclear. As of Wednesday night, no injuries had been reported, and the cause of the crash is unknown.

Photographs from the scene showed the state police helicopter on its side, with debris scattered across the grass. At least one person was seen being transported on a stretcher to a medical helicopter.

Carlisle Airport, located approximately 20 miles from Harrisburg, has a single 4,000-foot runway and does not have a control tower, a characteristic common to smaller airports.

Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity called the incident "heartbreaking" and expressed her thoughts for those involved, their families, and the first responders. The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General also shared that they are "praying for all involved."

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are scheduled to investigate the collision.
