Cam Skattebo marked his return from a serious injury by successfully executing his signature backflip celebration after scoring the New York Giants’ first touchdown in their 28-20 season-opening victory against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. This moment came approximately 10 months after Skattebo suffered a devastating open tibia fracture and right ankle dislocation that ended his rookie season.
Skattebo finished the game with 81 rushing yards on 18 carries. He also recovered his own fumble in the fourth quarter, contributing to the Giants' win. The successful backflip was a callback to his intention, as he had stated for about a month that he planned to perform the celebration upon scoring a touchdown. "That's what everybody wanted. That's what they wanted to see. The people wanted that. I knew I had to do it at least once," Skattebo said after the game. He also indicated he would likely move away from the celebration moving forward.
Skattebo's return also impacted the Giants' running back depth. While Devin Singletary appeared to thrive, Tyrone Tracy Jr. fumbled on his second rush and saw limited snaps. Najee Harris, a 1,000-yard rusher signed during training camp, was inactive, but Tracy's recent fumble could potentially lead to Harris seeing playing time next week.
Early in the second half, Skattebo demonstrated his capability with consecutive runs for 5 and 7 yards, showcasing his effectiveness in the Giants' run-heavy offense. The touchdown in the first quarter, where he ran untouched into the end zone, was a key moment in his comeback.
The path back from his injury was arduous, with Skattebo even considering retirement during the initial month of his recovery. His offseason also included a notable appearance at Fanatics Fest, where a failed backflip attempt drew attention. Regarding that incident, Skattebo acknowledged occasionally doing "dumb things" and suggested he likely wouldn't attempt it again. Head coach John Harbaugh jokingly commented, "Land the thing if you're going to do it."
Despite the past fumble, Skattebo's performance on Sunday was seen as a strong indicator of his return to form. "He's earned the right to go out there and be that dominant," said right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor. "He's worked his ass off. … It's only beginning for him."
