Singer Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, will be laid to rest next month in her hometown of Skewen, Wales, following her death at age 75. The "Total Eclipse of the Heart" singer passed away on July 8 in a hospital in Portugal, several months after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery and being placed in an induced coma. Her funeral is scheduled for August 17.
Plans for a "celebration of life" were announced by William Pressdee Funeralcare on behalf of Tyler's family. Prior to a private family service, a memorial procession will take place on August 15, with an invitation for fans to line the streets of Mumbles to pay their respects. The procession will travel through Skewen at approximately 1:20 PM en route to the committal service.
The statement noted that Gaynor will return to her hometown before the private service. The "celebration of life" ceremony will be held at Swansea Minster (St. Mary's Church) on August 17 at 12:00 PM.
Instead of flowers, Bonnie Tyler's family has requested donations to two charities she supported: the Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales and Cerebral Palsy Cymru. Her family and team released a statement on her website on July 9, stating they were "heartbroken" by her unexpected passing due to an illness she was being treated for.
Tyler, also known for hits like "Holding Out For A Hero," had been admitted to a hospital in May due to complications from a burst appendix and perforated intestine, which required immediate surgery. At the time, a spokesperson confirmed she was in an induced coma to aid recovery and requested privacy. She was initially hospitalized in Faro, Portugal, then transferred to intensive care. On June 15, her team announced she had woken from the medically-induced coma after suffering a cardiac arrest a month prior, though she remained seriously ill with a slow recovery process.
Tyler's last public performance was in March at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. She had been scheduled for a European tour later in the year, a summer festival appearance in Worcester, and a concert at Cardiff's Utilita Arena in December. She had reportedly been experiencing pain for several weeks prior to her hospitalization.
