Shania Twain, 60, has shared insights into her 15-year marriage with husband Frederic Thiebaud, attributing its success to their commitment to open communication and immediate conflict resolution. Twain noted that Thiebaud is particularly adept at ensuring discussions about issues occur promptly, preventing them from escalating.
"He's really good at reminding both of us that we have to keep communication open," Twain told People. She described Thiebaud as an "open" and "wonderful" partner when it comes to expressing feelings. While Twain admits her own tendency is to process issues privately, such as by taking a walk or playing her guitar, Thiebaud prefers a more direct approach.
"Fred wants to talk about it. He wants to talk it through, and he wants to fix it," Twain explained, adding that his method is effective. Thiebaud, 55, a former executive, contrasts with Twain's more reserved style when dealing with marital discord.
Twain's marriage to Thiebaud followed her divorce from Robert 'Mutt' Lange, which stemmed from an alleged affair between Lange and Thiebaud's then-wife, Marie-Anne. Twain and Lange, who share a son, Eja, 25, separated two years before their divorce was finalized in 2010. Twain and Thiebaud bonded over their shared experience of infidelity and began a relationship in 2009, marrying on January 1, 2011, in Puerto Rico.
Twain referred to Thiebaud as her "forever true love… the love I'm going to grow old with." She has spoken about the process of forgiveness, stating in a May 2024 podcast appearance that it involves letting go and understanding the other person, rather than necessarily forgetting. She clarified that while she acknowledges past wrongs, she does not dwell on them, stating, "Do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake? No. It's his mistake. Not my mistake."
Reflecting on her past, Twain recalled telling herself after her divorce that she would never marry again. However, she described her connection with Thiebaud as an "undeniable love," acknowledging that they both carried "deep scars in common" and played a significant role in each other's healing process. Twain's seventh studio album, 'Little Miss Twain,' was released on July 24.
