Television personality Shane Richie is reportedly facing concerns from those close to him regarding his demanding work schedule and past associations, following his arrest and charge for drink-driving. Reports also suggest his wife has stepped away from their joint business ventures.
Richie, 62, known for his role as Alfie Moon in the BBC soap EastEnders, was charged with drink-driving after an incident at a petrol station in Harlow, Essex. Police were called to the scene after a dispute involving Richie, who was seen vaping at the station despite warnings about the potential dangers around fuel.
According to a report in The Sun, sources close to Richie have expressed worry that he may be experiencing a period of intense stress, potentially impacting his role on the soap. One source stated, "This has been a long time coming. Shane has been struggling to keep up with the demands of his workload and it appears it has all got a bit much. Everyone is so concerned about him."
The actor's current storyline as the landlord of the Queen Vic has reportedly led to a continuous filming schedule. Additionally, Richie is preparing for a national theatre tour in September. "When Shane gets stressed he does like a drink, he has made no secret of that," a source told the publication.
Concerns have also been raised about potential repercussions from BBC bosses, with speculation that Richie could face suspension. The report mentions fears that Richie might spend a month away with "drinking buddies from the nineties" during his upcoming tour.
Questions have also arisen regarding Richie's marriage to actress Christie Goddard. Reports indicate that Goddard was removed as a director of their joint company, Bluebelle Skye Productions, in June. The couple, who married in 2007, have three children together.
The incident at the petrol station occurred late on Wednesday night. Richie reportedly drove onto the forecourt with a flat tire. When confronted by staff about vaping, he initially responded dismissively. The situation escalated when the petrol station manager contacted the police.
Essex Police confirmed that officers arrested a man on suspicion of drink-driving. Shane Roche, 62, has been charged and is scheduled to appear in magistrates' court on September 9.
Richie has a long history with EastEnders, appearing in multiple stints since 2002. His character has been a regular fixture since 2022. He also reprised his role in the spin-off series Redwater in 2017.
Richie's personal life has previously been marked by public attention. He was married to Loose Women star Coleen Nolan from 1990 to 1999, with whom he shares a son, Shane Jr. Richie has publicly admitted to infidelity during that marriage. He also had an affair with dancer Claire Tyler while married to Nolan and discussed his struggles with alcohol in his 2003 autobiography.
