Police have arrested seven people on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of a newborn baby girl in Sheffield. Authorities were called to a property in the Wincobank area of the city shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday following reports of concern for the baby's safety. Upon arrival, officers discovered the infant, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives are continuing to question the seven individuals, who remain in police custody. Investigators are working to determine the ages of those arrested.
Neighbors reported that the house, a two-story, three-bedroom property, was rented by a family and often housed more people than its intended capacity. One resident described the household as a Slovakian family with frequent comings and goings, likening the activity to ‘Piccadilly Circus.’ This neighbor stated she never saw a pregnant woman in the household. Another neighbor indicated that as many as ten to twelve people had occupied the house at times, making sleeping arrangements difficult.
The baby's death is believed to have occurred around 10 p.m. on Saturday. According to a neighbor who shared CCTV footage with police, the family reportedly left the house in groups after the infant's death. The eldest son and his girlfriend allegedly departed around 4 a.m. Sunday, followed by the mother and approximately five others shortly before 6 a.m., just before police arrived.
A forensics team was seen entering the property on Monday as the investigation continued. A cadaver dog was also observed being used by a police dog handler to search nearby areas.
Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight of South Yorkshire Police stated that the force is aware the news is concerning and assured the community that a dedicated team is working to ensure justice for the baby girl. The investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the infant's death and the roles of those arrested.
