A "sensory prom" held in Coventry on June 30 provided a more managed and accessible celebration for school leavers with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The event, organized by Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind (CWWMind), aimed to offer an experience comparable to traditional proms but adapted for attendees who might find loud music and large crowds overwhelming.

Unlike typical proms, the sensory prom featured music played at a lower volume and included quiet rooms where attendees could retreat if the environment became too stimulating. This approach allowed students with SEND to participate in a celebratory event marking the transition from school to their next chapter.

One parent, Kate, shared that the event was a "perfect end" for her 15-year-old daughter, Lillie-Mae. "She liked the fact she could get away to separate rooms if it got too much," Kate said. "I was not expecting her to get up and dance, yet she was up there, enjoying every minute."

This initiative is believed to be the first of its kind in Coventry, addressing the need for inclusive celebrations for all students. The traditional leavers prom, while a common rite of passage, can present challenges for individuals with SEND, making adapted events like the sensory prom a valuable addition to school leavers' experiences.
