A DeHavilland DHC-3 seaplane crashed off the coast of Washington state near Sucia Island around 5:20 p.m. local time, resulting in multiple injuries, including one person in critical condition.
The Federal Aviation Administration and local authorities confirmed the incident, stating that all 11 individuals aboard the aircraft were rescued from the water. The San Juan County Sheriff's Office reported that patients sustained injuries ranging from head trauma to broken bones and lacerations.
The seaplane, operated by Kenmore Air, had departed from Lake Union in Seattle with 10 passengers and one pilot. The company confirmed that four injured passengers were transported to hospitals, while the remaining passengers were taken to the Bellingham Coast Guard Station.
Witnesses, including civilian boaters, assisted in the rescue efforts before emergency responders arrived. San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter described the scene upon arrival as the plane being on fire and sinking, commending the swift actions of those involved for preventing a worse outcome.
A significant emergency response was mobilized, involving the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard had received a report of the seaplane making an emergency landing in North Beach Shallow Bay before catching fire.
Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel expressed gratitude that everyone was accounted for and stated the company's immediate focus is on providing care and support to the passengers and pilot. He also extended thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard, local emergency responders, and assisting parties. Kenmore Air is cooperating fully with the investigating authorities.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.
