Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy defended his use of the term "libtard" at a state fair event, responding to criticism by questioning the abortion stances of those who admonished him. The comment, a portmanteau of "liberal" and "retard," was made Wednesday night at the Great American State Fair while Duffy was speaking before President Donald Trump's appearance.
Duffy, addressing the crowd, criticized musical acts that had declined to perform at the event due to its partisan nature. "I think we have to give a big round of applause for our military band and singers," he said. "Way better than those libtards that canceled on us. So much better. Thank you, guys. President Trump will make you famous."
The remark drew particular criticism because Duffy made it in front of his youngest daughter, Valentina, who has Down syndrome. Social media users reacted negatively to his choice of words.
When reached for comment by HuffPost, Duffy stated, "I will not be lectured by the same people who want to abort babies with special needs." He added, "Rather than policing language, maybe liberals should spend time with these beautiful children, acknowledge their humanity, and while they’re at it, try loving their country more than they hate President Trump."
