Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has made fourteen alterations to his starting lineup for the Nations Championship match against Fiji, a move he contends is not a gamble but a deliberate strategy to provide opportunities for his entire squad.

Only Gregor Brown remains in the same position from the team that narrowly lost to South Africa last week, shifting from lock to No. 8. Several key players, including Finn Russell, Ben White, Jack Dempsey, and Matt Fagerson, have been rested. Others, such as Zander Fagerson, Pierre Schoeman, Scott Cummings, and captain Sione Tuipulotu, are named on the bench.

This significant turnover means first starts in the pack for Gregor Hiddleston and Freddy Douglas. Hooker Seb Stephen is set to make his Scotland debut as a replacement. The team will be captained by Stafford McDowall. Six players in the matchday squad have fewer than ten caps.

Townsend stated that the plan all along was to utilize the full squad across the three Nations Championship matches. "We’ve always said that this will be a tour where everybody gets an opportunity," Townsend said. "Everyone else that’s came on tour is going to get a chance to play. And a lot of them are getting a chance to start this weekend."

He emphasized the importance of developing squad depth. "We’ve got to have an eye on the future so the depth that we’ve created — and are still creating — only comes if you give people opportunities," Townsend explained. "I think those descriptions (of it being a second string) are gone. You don’t see it as first team, second team. It’s an opportunity for 14 of the guys that didn’t play last week, an opportunity to play at home and also to finish this season individually and as a team."

Regarding the extensive changes, Townsend asserted, "No. I think because they’ve trained a lot together, we felt that was important. Last week a lot of those combinations were training against the team playing against South Africa."

Experienced players Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe, Scotland's leading try-scorers, are also returning to the starting lineup. Their inclusion comes after recent strong performances from Glasgow teammates Kyle Steyn and Jamie Dobie, which had led to Graham and van der Merwe seeing reduced roles.

"They’ve got the chance to show the quality that they have," Townsend added. "Both of them can consider themselves unlucky not to have played in the first two games. They realise there’s competition and that this is a big opportunity. They’re really motivated."

The match at Murrayfield will also feature a tribute to the late Scott Hastings. The No. 13 jersey worn by Ollie Smith will be gold in honor of the Grand Slam-winning center. "The iconic images I have of Scott when I was a supporter were of him playing in that 13 jersey against England in the Grand Slam game in 1990," Townsend recalled. "The message we want to send out there is, “Scott, you wore the 13 for so many years, so we’re going to have that number in gold”. And it’ll stand out."

Separately, 17-year-old Jake Dalziel, son of Scotland forwards coach John, will start at fly-half for the Scotland U20s as they face Wales. Townsend confirmed he was not involved in Dalziel's decision to join the Newcastle Red Bull academy, despite his consultancy role with Red Bull.
