Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer could potentially support Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if she decides to run for president, according to political insiders. This potential alignment comes as far-left candidates have seen recent success in primary elections, signaling a shift in the Democratic Party's base.
One longtime New York Democratic operative suggested that Schumer, described as a pragmatic political strategist, would likely become a vocal champion for Ocasio-Cortez if she were to pursue the White House. "Schumer's a smart enough person where if it is that time [for an AOC White House run], he would probably be one of her biggest champions," the operative stated.
This stance would represent a significant political maneuver for Schumer, who has a history of adapting to evolving political tides. The operative noted Schumer's past support for local left-wing candidates and his endorsement of Hillary Clinton in 2016. Ocasio-Cortez, who began paying dues to the party's campaign fundraising arm in 2024, has been seen as transitioning from an outsider to a more integrated figure within the Democratic establishment.
Recent primary victories by three far-left House candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are seen as fueling the momentum of this progressive faction. The congresswoman's participation in the Democratic National Convention in 2024, where she spoke about the party's nominee working towards a Gaza ceasefire, drew criticism from some progressive circles. However, an establishment Democratic aide suggested that Ocasio-Cortez has developed a mutual respect for Schumer, potentially paving the way for an accommodation.
When asked about a potential Senate run, Ocasio-Cortez responded coyly to a reporter this week, stating, "I'm not going to be breaking any news here."
A Republican operative, commenting on Schumer's long tenure in Congress, predicted that Ocasio-Cortez could pose a challenge in the 2028 election cycle if Democrats continue to shift leftward. Schumer himself declined to comment on his political future or a potential Ocasio-Cortez presidential bid, but emphasized his focus on regaining control of the Senate and the White House.
"We need to look at the entire country," Schumer said in a statement. "We have centrists making real gains in New Jersey, Iowa, and Virginia, and progressive energy here in New York City. At the end of the day, my sole focus is one thing: taking back the Senate and reversing the damage Donald Trump has done to the United States."
