Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has responded to criticism from some within the MAGA movement regarding her administration's anti-welfare fraud advertisement. The ad featured a white man, identified as "Brad," who was portrayed as choosing not to work while receiving government benefits.
Sanders described the backlash as "overblown and incredibly manufactured." She stated on Fox News that "a variety of different people" opt out of working and instead receive government benefits. In the ad, Sanders claimed that Brad had "turned relaxing into a full-time profession" and that taxpayers fund benefits for those who "just choose not to work."
The advertisement drew criticism from some conservative commentators. Right-wing pastor Joel Webbon suggested on X, formerly Twitter, that Sanders should have used a Black individual in the ad to make the message more believable. Sanders initially responded to this criticism with a jest, asking if critics would next suggest using cookies instead of cheese balls to represent the individual.
Defending her policy, Sanders asserted on Fox News that her administration is "getting the job done." She urged that instead of conservatives criticizing fellow conservatives, they should support the policy initiative, which aims to implement welfare-to-work requirements. The policy mandates that individuals who are young, healthy, and receive government assistance should either work, attend school, or volunteer.
