Sandra Bullock has revealed that the severe toll of her partner Bryan Randall's amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) battle directly led to her decision to step away from acting. The actress described a particularly difficult reshoot for "The Lost City" as the moment she realized she could no longer continue.
"When Bryan got sick, after ‘Lost City,’ I was like, ‘I can’t.’ I thought I was going to have a little bit of a mental issue. I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I can’t,’” Bullock recalled on the “SmartLess” podcast. She recounted arriving for the reshoot with only a few hours of sleep, and her appearance causing concern among the production crew.
"I looked so bad, and when I say so bad, like my face, it was horrific. I could maybe manage four hours of the reshoot and they were like, ‘Can you just give us [another take]?’ I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I’ve got to go home.’ And I went home," she said. Bullock, 62, stated that the studio had to digitally alter her face to match the rest of the film, calling the process a "horror show."
It was in that moment that Bullock decided to halt her acting career. "So I did that and then I just pulled the plug. I said I can’t anymore. I have nothing to give right now. Nothing. Zero," she stated.
Randall's family announced his death in August 2023, stating he passed away peacefully after a three-year private battle with ALS. He was 57. His family also shared that Randall had chosen to keep his journey with the disease private. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Bullock and Randall met in January 2015 when he photographed her son's birthday party. They made their red carpet debut later that year. Bullock has largely maintained a low profile since Randall's passing, with a notable public appearance in April at her first red carpet event in over four years.
