Newly-engaged Sam Smith and fiancé Christian Cowan were seen together in New York City on Wednesday, marking their first public appearance since confirming their engagement last month. The couple coordinated their casual attire during a stroll in the city.
Smith, 34, wore a Disney top and denim shorts, while Cowan, 32, opted for a white vest and jeans. The couple, who have been dating for over three years, confirmed their engagement after dating for that period. Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, spoke to The New York Times about their relationship, stating, "For me, there's something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs. I'm not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving."
The Grammy-winning artist also shared that the lead track from their album, "Everlasting Love," was the first time they had written songs about requited love. The couple's engagement was reportedly overheard just before they arrived at the Met Gala at New York City's Mark Hotel in May. Cowan, who designed the couple's Met Gala outfits for 2026, was seen wearing a large square-cut yellow diamond ring by Cartier on his wedding finger at the event, and appeared to be wearing the same ring during their Met Gala appearance. Smith was not seen wearing a ring on their left hand, which was covered by a sheer black glove.
An insider told PageSix that the engagement was private and that Smith and Cowan were "over the moon" and "so in love." The couple began dating in late 2022 and made their relationship public in May 2024 with their Met Gala debut.
Cowan, a UK-born fashion designer, has worked with numerous celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, and Paris Hilton. In 2023, during the early stages of their relationship, Smith told The Sunday Times they were "happier than ever" and credited Cowan with helping boost their confidence. The couple faced brief rumors of a split in the past, which were denied by a source close to Smith, who stated they were "still very much in a relationship and haven't been on Raya."
