Actress Sally Phillips has voiced strong criticism regarding the BBC's representation of women in comedy writing and directing roles, describing the statistics as "heinous." Phillips, who co-created and co-wrote the sketch show "Smack the Pony," suggested that her outspokenness might prevent her from being employed by the BBC again.

During an appearance on the Girls On Film podcast, Phillips noted that while more women are involved in comedy than in the past, the industry remains "dominated by white men." She cited statistics indicating that only 11% of all TV comedies are directed by women, with the BBC's figure standing at 8%. Phillips further claimed that if individuals married to BBC commissioners are excluded, the percentage of female directors drops to 3%.

She also addressed writers' rooms, estimating them to be around 17-18% mixed, with a significantly lower percentage for solo female writers. Phillips highlighted that women of color are even less represented, stating that only 4.5% of comedies are directed by women of color, despite their disproportionate success. She argued for increased opportunities for women, particularly women of color, in writing and directing comedy.

"It's really hard to break away from that because if you're not given chances then you're not given a chance to fail actually," Phillips stated, emphasizing the difficulty for emerging talent to gain a foothold.

This critique follows Phillips' earlier experience with public backlash after her 2016 BBC documentary, "A World Without Down's Syndrome?" The film, intended to highlight family life and the challenges of raising a child with Down's syndrome, led to her son, Olly, facing online abuse. Phillips expressed concern about the online environment for individuals with Down's syndrome, noting their heightened sensitivity to grief and joy, and stated that "anything good has ever come out of social media."

Despite the negative experience, Phillips remains committed to creating content that includes characters with Down's syndrome, though she is uncertain about producing another documentary on the subject due to the personal cost of the last one.
