Rutgers University will debut special uniforms and helmets to honor the 37 alumni who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The tribute will be worn during the team's upcoming game against Boston College on Friday, marking the 25th anniversary of the tragic events.
"As we take the field on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we honor all of those whose lives were lost on that tragic day, including our 37 @RutgersU alumni. We remember. We honor. We will never forget," the Rutgers football program announced on Twitter.
This marks a significant commemoration of the anniversary, with the sport often reflecting patriotic themes. The NFL is also planning to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 across its stadiums. Rutgers is elevating its tribute by specifically recognizing its own graduates who were victims of the attacks.
Among those being honored is Welles Crowther, a Boston College graduate who died while helping others escape the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The Eagles will also be wearing special uniforms to honor Crowther's heroism.
The uniforms are designed to remember the 37 Rutgers graduates whose lives were cut short by the attacks, reinforcing the connection between the university community and the national tragedy. The move highlights the role college athletics can play in commemorating significant historical events and honoring sacrifices made.
