One person was killed and eight others were injured in a Russian overnight attack on Kyiv that involved ballistic missiles, local authorities reported. The assault, which began around 1:30 a.m. local time and lasted for several hours, caused explosions throughout the capital and sparked fires in five districts.
Residential buildings, office and industrial sites, a dormitory, and vehicles sustained damage, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Rescue workers extracted four individuals from a burning private home in the Sviatoshynskyi district and evacuated residents from a burning three-story building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Fires in a non-residential building were also contained. A body was later discovered at the scene.
Firefighters also addressed blazes in the Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi, and Dnipro districts. These strikes occurred as Ukraine grapples with a significant shortage of Patriot air defense missiles, which are considered its most effective interceptor for Russian ballistic missiles.
In parallel, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to grant Ukraine licenses for the production of Patriot interceptor missiles. Such a move could potentially strengthen Kyiv's defenses against Russian ballistic missile attacks. However, specific details and a timeline for the implementation of this decision remain undisclosed.
